The body work was done by Milnes, Voss of Birkenhead, better known for building tramcars the reversed spiral staircase (which must have obscured the driver’s nearside vision) is reminiscent of tramcar practice. This is a 43 seater X type seen here on 14th August 1906. Despite being in the remote part of the British Isles, Orkney was home to a fleet of buses in Edwardian times known as the ‘Orkney Motor Express’ which connected the 15 miles between Kirkwall, the capital of Mainland the largest island in the Orkney Isles and Stomness via Fintown. In 1906 this was part of the fleet, long before such veicles were seen in many important southern cities.
